The cost of greener shipping

Ships are crucial to the global economy, carrying about 90 per cent of all goods traded around the world. Shipping also sends around a billion tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere each year, thanks to highly polluting, heavy fuel oil, but as the FT’s Harry Dempsey explains, any transition to greener fuels could be expensive, and consumers will likely foot the bill.
