Cities increase emissions disclosure

Cities, home to 55 per cent of the global population and accounting for 70 per cent of global emissions, are at the forefront of this challenge and have a vital role to play in meeting global targets, according to data from the CDP.

Aiming for net zero by 2050, researchers say cities must ensure they are reducing at scale and pace by setting mid-term and long-term science based targets.

1 The reference to a “city” in the report applies to any entity that submitted data through the Cities 2020 Questionnaire in the CDP-ICLEI Unified Reporting System. The analysis contains data from towns, cities or, in some instances, groups of cities at different administrative levels that reported in 2020. This includes metropolitan areas, combined authorities, and some regional councils.
2 The data for this report was collected in partnership by CDP and ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability.
3 Cities datasets are available to the public at no cost via the CDP Open Data Portal at https://data.cdp.net/.
